Derby Day, Wiener Dog Style at Westport Oktoberfest

Dachshunds were the 13th most popular breed in the US in 2017, according to the American Kennel Club, but on Saturday, September 30,  they were far and away the most popular breed in Westport.  One hundred and fifty dachshunds of all varieties (smooth, wire haired, and long-haired, that is, as well as a few suspiciously tall mixed breeds) along with the humans who love them queued up along the block in front of McCoy’s to register for the Wiener Dog Rally.  Dogs competed in two costume contests, best Oktoberfest and best any other, and vied for the titles of fastest and slowest.  Prizes were donated by Bark Bay KC and U Wash Puppy.  Three pets found forever homes during the event.  Crowds lined the fences early to get a view of the races.  We watched some warm-up laps but missed our chance for a good spot to watch the competition.  Lucky for us, some of the cutest and fastest dogs of the day joined us in the beer tent post-race. We hope Unleashed Pet Rescue will sponsor this event again.  Next time, perhaps the venue will allow for a better spectator experience.
